How to find clients for a local service business in Facebook groups

“Can anyone recommend a good plumber?” People ask this in local groups every day. And the replies usually tag someone they know from helpful comments, not from ads. So how do you become that person?

Where to find clients

  1. 01Local recommendation groups, neighborhood groups and buy-and-sell groups. That's where people ask for recommendations. Your best source.
  2. 02Groups for parents, homeowners and people who just moved. Good clients, but stricter about promotion.
  3. 03Groups about your trade: pool owners, dog owners, classic cars. Small, but full of exactly your people.

Search for “[city] recommendations” and “[neighborhood] neighbors.” Ask your clients which groups they read, and look at where your competitors comment. Then watch your top ten groups for a week or two. You want groups with a few posts a day, members who look like your clients, rules that allow businesses, and admins who keep things in order.

How to become the one people recommend

  • For the first few weeks, just be a member. Leave helpful comments and say nothing about your business.
  • Then start answering questions about your trade without selling anything. For example: “I'm an electrician. It's usually the breaker, so check that first.”
  • After a month or two, people will start tagging you on their own. Now you can post about yourself once in a while.

Don't jump in with “Me! Call me!” every time someone asks for a recommendation. Wait to be tagged, or start with advice.

Posts that work

  • A story from a job. The neighborhood, what happened, what the real cause was, how long it took, and a useful tip at the end.
  • A before and after with photos. Especially if you saved someone from an inflated quote.
  • A seasonal tip. What often breaks this time of year and how to check it in ten minutes.
  • A thank-you to a client (if they're okay with it) and a request for a review.
  • An open slot after a cancellation. Only if it's real, and no more than once a month.
Story from a job

Quick note for anyone in Oak Park with an older water heater. Got a call yesterday: no hot water for three days, and another company had already quoted $1,900 for a new heater. Turned out it was a $40 thermocouple. Fixed it in half an hour. If your pilot light keeps going out, check that part first before you agree to a new heater.

What gets local businesses banned

  • Straight-up ads with a phone number.
  • Links in the post.
  • Price lists.
  • Fake reviews from friends and family.
  • The same post in every group on the same day.
  • Copying competitors who spam. It works for a month, and then come the bans.

How to grow and what to track

Once things are working in a few groups, move into other neighborhoods. Use the same true story, but put it in different words for each group and leave a few minutes between posts. Answer comments yourself, at a set time after each round of posts.

Ask every new client how they heard about you, and write down the group. After about three months you'll know which groups bring in jobs. Focus on those and drop the weak ones.

How Postyfy helps

  • A separate list for each neighborhood, like “Oak Park” and “Evanston,” each on its own day of the week. That way, one post per group per week happens on its own.
  • Spintax and AI retell the same story differently for each group.
  • The Group parser finds “[city] recommendations” groups with the member count you want.
  • The Report with screenshots shows where a post went live and where it's waiting for an admin to approve it.

Let Postyfy do the repetitive part

Warm-up, spintax, AI rewrites, pauses between groups and one schedule for all your accounts. Set it up once, then just check the report.
